Winter Home Maintenance Checklist: Keep Your Texas Home Cozy and Protected

11/14/2025

As temperatures drop and the holidays arrive, a little preparation can make a big difference in keeping your home comfortable and efficient. Whether you’re beginning your new home search in Houston or exploring new home options in San Antonio, knowing how to care for your home through the winter months ensures lasting comfort and peace of mind.

Why Winter Home Maintenance Matters in Texas

While Texas winters are generally mild, sudden cold fronts can still cause headaches for homeowners. Taking time to check insulation, protect plumbing and prepare your heating system helps prevent damage and keeps your home cozy all season long.

Your Winter Home Maintenance Checklist

1. Protect Your Pipes
Wrap exposed pipes and outdoor faucets to prevent freezing. Disconnect and store hoses, drain, cover sprinkler risers and turn up heat to 70 degrees+ when temperatures drop below freezing.

2. Test Heating Systems
Run your heater and replace air filters. If you notice unusual noises or uneven heating, schedule a service appointment. The media, air conditioner and dehumidifier filters (if present) must be changed every two to four months, depending on usage and environmental conditions.

3. Check Weather Stripping and Caulking
Inspect door and window seals and hardware to keep warm air in and cold air out, improving energy efficiency. Tighten screws as needed. Inspect and repair the following caulked areas, as necessary: Kitchen and bath wet areas, flushing areas, window and door seals, around all exterior penetrations (hose bibbs, electrical boxes & conduit), fiber cement siding and mortar cracks.

4. Reverse Ceiling Fans and Check Vents
Switch ceiling fans to rotate clockwise to push warm air downward and reduce heating costs. Inspect, lubricate and clean all exterior vents to ensure air flows freely and that each vent has an operable damper.

5. Inspect Roof and Gutters
Heavy wind and rain can loosen shingles or clog gutters. Look for loose shingles and ensure gutters are free of material that could prevent the free flow of water. Make sure you have splash blocks at the base of the downspout to deflect water away from your home. A reputable roofing contractor is recommended for any roof repair.
